Habitat-Roanoke Donates Two Accessible Homes to Independent Living Center

On March 26, Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley (Virginia) officially turned over the keys of two accessible homes to Blue Ridge Independent Living Center. The homes will be used as short-term rental housing for clients seeking to learn independence and gain accessibility. Key accessibility features of the homes include access ramps, custom appliances, cabinets and counters, roll-in showers and toilets with accompanying rails.
In July 2022, the city of Roanoke awarded competitive American Rescue Plan Act grant funds to Habitat-Roanoke in order to build the homes. The housing is part of a long-term investment to increase the health and economic resilience of its citizens by providing opportunities for housing stability sought by its most vulnerable residents.
Blue Ridge Independent Learning Center was established in 1989 as a private, nonprofit community agency. The organization offers a variety of services, including help with accessible home modifications. Support for the center’s services is made possible by local, state and federal sources, as well as donations from regional businesses and individuals.
