Housing for ALS Patients, Caretakers Wins AIA Award for Universal Dwelling Design

Matt’s Place in Spokane, Washington has won an AIA Housing Award, under the Universal Dwelling Design category. AIA awards acknowledge impactful, exemplary work that sets new standards and inspires others. The 2025 award recipients are comprised of nearly 30 award categories and recognize almost 200 award recipients and projects.
Working with Matt’s Place Foundation, architectural firm Miller Hull Partnership created a sustainable, replicable 1,500-square-foot home tailored to the needs of ALS patients and their family members or caretakers.
The carport and covered roof deck provide weather-protected spaces for the patient to move from vehicle to wheelchair safely.

Cross-laminated timber walls and ceilings accommodate weather barriers, structural splines, recessed outlets and accessible plumbing chases, while also providing a warm, biophilic environment for patient well-being.
The property is equipped with smart technology tailored for ALS patients, including home control systems operated by the occupant’s eye movements. Learn more about the project here.
