Groundbreaking Kicks Off Accessible Smart Home Development in Ohio
Hamilton County Commissioners joined Living Arrangements for the Developmentally Disabled, Hamilton County Developmental Disabilities Services and the Cincinnati Development Fund to break ground on a new smart home designed from the ground up for accessibility, independence and community inclusion.
The home, located in Colerain Township, Ohio, represents the next step in Hamilton County’s $4-million partnership with LADD to expand affordable, accessible housing options for adults with developmental disabilities. The project is part of a nine-home development that, once completed, will offer life-changing opportunities for 36 residents with developmental disabilities. CDF also contributed $1.2 million to the broader project with the rest of the contributions from private donors.
Homes will be located in Colerain Township, Springfield Township and Hyde Park, with staggered openings beginning in late spring 2026 through early 2027.
The smart home model combines universal design, smart-home technology and in-person LADD staff support to help residents live independently, safely and affordably. Each home is built to be energy-efficient and thoughtfully located near sidewalks and public transportation to keep residents connected to community life — shopping locally, working nearby and participating fully in civic activities.
Homes will be fully furnished and feature accessibility-driven design elements, including:
• Induction stoves and smart appliances
• Low-flow plumbing fixtures and energy-efficient lighting
• Motion sensors for off-site monitoring and water sensors for safety
• SMART refrigerators and easy-to-use dishwashers
• ADA-accessible bathrooms
• Sensory and fitness room.
