Living In Place Institute Marks 10th Anniversary Promoting Better Homebuilding Standards
The Living In Place Institute marks its 10th anniversary. During its first decade the institute has accredited over 1,000 professionals as Certified Living In Place Professionals, following a 16-hour training course, according to Louie Delaware, founder and president.
The range of disciplines of those trained includes remodeling and building contractors, interior designers, architects, medical professionals, federal and local officials involved with veterans’ affairs and community housing standards, university students preparing for building-related careers, manufacturers developing products for the living-in-place market and sales consultants representing products that enhance home safety and accessibility.
The institute has already commissioned a range of building and design professionals to be ambassadors for the entity and conducts monthly Zoom Community Forums that are open to all professionals.
Work has started on the Institute’s Idea Home in Louisville, Colorado, a demonstration home which will display architecture and design features that further the capacity to live in place. Those measures include zero-step entries from both street and garage; a floor plan that mitigates the need for steps between primary living areas and the primary bedroom suite; halls and doorways designed for walkers and wheelchairs; kitchen and bath design suited to users with disabilities; and lighting, safety and smart-home technologies that eliminate a wide range of risks.
